Frederic Dale Canning passed into the waiting arms of the Lord on September 18, 2019. Fred was born in Richmond, California on February 15, 1930 to Frank and Cena Canning. The family relocated back to Oregon when Fred was three years old, and Fred grew up in the Portland area where he attended Central Catholic High School. Fred served a two- year commitment in the Navy where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Helena and then spent multiple years in the Naval Reserve. After the Navy Fred graduated from The University of Oregon, and Northwestern College of Law and was a practicing attorney for over 40 years in Portland and Oregon City before retiring in Canby. Fred was admitted to the Oregon Bar in 1959 and his reputation as a litigator was outstanding. He was well known for his excellent trail preparation and ability to serve the needs of his client. His professional memberships included the Oregon Association of Defense Council with a stint as state president in 1973. After retirement Fred spent many months on the island of Maui which he considered a little “piece of paradise” and where he established many long-time friendships. Fred also lent many hours to the counseling and mentoring of AA members who sought his input and leadership to successfully overcome their burdensome disease. He was an amazing. brilliant, loving and caring father, father-in law, grandfather, great- grandfather and friend. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brothers Ed and Dick and his son- in- law Tom Mardock. Fred is survived by his daughter Denise Mardock of Canby, Oregon, son David (Debi) Canning of San Antonio, Texas, grandsons Ryan (Anika) Mardock of San Diego, California, Andrew (Jessica) Mardock of Bend, Oregon, Grant Canning of Austin, Texas and great granddaughter Coralyn Mardock of Bend, Oregon. Fred valued education and his grandsons are a living testimonial to his example. Between the three, they have earned three Bachelor’s Degrees, a Doctor of Jurisprudence and three Masters Degrees. He can be very proud of the “legacy of learning” that he began so many years before. The family would like to thank the administration and care givers of Countryside Living in Canby and the staff of Legacy Hospice Service for their compassionate and wonderful assistance over the last several months. The family will be having a private service to celebrate his life. This celebration will be filled with stories and laughter knowing that Fred lived a full and complete life.
