J. Ward O'Brien
July 7, 1935 - November 10, 2020
In Memoriam John Ward “Obie” O’Brien, took his first breath July 7, 1935 in Wheaton, Illinois and was welcomed with joy by his parents Harold Kenneth O’Brien and Mary Louise (Fitzgerald) O’Brien. He took his last breath November 10, 2020 in Woodburn, Oregon. He was 85. His first marriage was to Patricia Lorraine (Mowrey) Hudson on July 23, 1955. From that union four children were born. He married Shirley Janet (Smith) O’Brien in Sept. 3, 1977 in Woodburn Oregon. They had been married 43 years. Shirley brought four daughters to this union. Obie worked many different jobs, including computer programing, way back when punch cards were used. He loved to drive and made many trips all over the Unites States. Part of his driving included limo driving, and Dial-a-Ride, taking veterans and many others to their medical appointments. He enjoyed volunteering, his membership and time spent with the Stereoscopic Club in Portland, Oregon. He was an avid 3D photographer which he learned from his father, using the same camera he inherited. He eventually upgraded to a two camera set of his own invention and finally to an all-in-one digital unit. He loved his gadgets. He had a great life, and worked very hard to meld all of the children from both marriages into one big, happy family. His children reminded him that he had succeeded. He was a humble and stubborn man, but above all he dearly loved his family. Obie is preceded in death by his parents, first wife, a grandson Kevin Jenkins, and a step-daughter Diana L. Brock. He is survived by his wife Shirley, son- David K. O’Brien and wife Phyllis; daughters- Kathleen L. O’Brien; Kelly J. Sheehan and husband David; Kimbelle A. Croson and husband Kenny. Step-daughters- Stephanie J. Garrison and husband Phil, Michelle M. Swan and husband Mike, Rene A. Smiley and honorary daughter Debi L. Swan. Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beloved cousins, that were like siblings to him. He will be missed by a great many family members and friends. There will not be a funeral; his ashes will be dispersed according to his wishes. Please find a personal way to celebrate your memories of Obie!
